My last day as a volunteer

I came to Poland almost one year ago, it was a strange country for me, here everything is different and everybody is blonde (not everybody, but you understand me, right?).

Vine a Polonia casi hace un año, era un país extraño para mí , aquí todo es diferente y todo el mundo es rubio (ok, no todo el mundo, pero me entiendes, ¿verdad?).

Little did I know that my life was going to change that much for good. Here I learned that the power of volunteering and friendship is all you need to survive a Polish Winter, maybe for you this Winter wasn’t hard at all, but for me, well, I feel like a proud survivor.

Poco me podía imaginar yo que mi vida iba a cambiar tanto, pero para bien. Aquí he aprendido que el poder del voluntariado y la amistad es todo lo que uno necesita para sobrevivir un invierno polaco. Esto suena mucho más empalagoso en español que en inglés y no sé bien el porqué.

I want to thank all the people from Fundacja Wiatrak for everything, thank you Ania and Maciej for choosing me and giving to me this chance to grow. A big big big thank you also to Ala, Natalia and Sylwia, the three girl super heroes from the Education Department where I worked here in Wiatrak. To my Polish teacher/mentor Agnieszka, thanks for the patience and for being always there to save my life.

Quiero darle las gracias a toda la gente de la Fundación Wiatrak por todo, gracias a Ania y a Maciej por haberme escogido a mí y por darme esta oportunidad de crecimiento personal. Un gracias muy muy muy grande también para Ala, Natalia y Sylwia, las tres super heroínas del Departamento de Educación donde yo trabajaba. A mi profesora de polaco/mentora, gracias por tu paciencia y por estar siempre ahí, dispuesta a salvarme la vida.

For the other volunteers, thank you for cheering me up when I was sad, for your support and for your empathy.

Al resto de voluntarios, gracias por animarme cuando estaba triste, por vuestro apoyo y vuestra empatía.

Alejandro, you should know that you have a golden heart and you are the most loyal person I have ever met, you were one of my main pillars here since the first day. And remember, you own nothing to no one, at the end we make ourselves, don’t forget that.

Alejandro, deberías saber que tienes un corazón de oro y que eres una de las personas más leales que conozco, fuiste una de mis pilares fundamentales desde el primer día. Y recuerda, no debes nada a nadie, nosotros nos hacemos a nosotros mismos, no olvides eso

I want to thank Cosmina for her honesty because her opinions had always something to learn. Keep being a wild flower and taking selfies for us to see them on Instagram.

To Radu I want to say that he is an annoying weirdo, but a lovable one. And even if he is now faaaaar away, we will always be here for him. We miss your sarcasm a lot, we are getting lamer without you, bro.

Dear Ana, we know since we were babies (College) and I knew this experience was going to be good for you and I wasn’t wrong (duh), I’m very happy to have you in my life because our friendship is unusual and therapeutic. Thank you for being such a strong woman (YOU ARE!), for cleaning always after me (I’m a mess) and for basically everything. I’m sure you will find the right place for you in this world, just keep looking for it.

What can I say about Goncalo? Thank you for being there always for me, for the confessions you told me and for hearing mines, for being my friend even when you know that I’m the biggest drama queen in town. Continue being as nice as you are and searching everything on Google (even if that annoys me).

Ivan, If you put effort and you fight for what you want, your life will be bright, just don’t let the bad habits and the laziness get over you.

Denissa, I don’t know where you are right now, but I hope you found what you were looking in life and that you got to know a little bit about our cultures during your stay here.

To the newbies, Carla and Alexandra: your adventure just started and I want to give you a few tips:

Save money for Summer.
Try all beers in Polo.
Keep the contact with volunteers from other cities.
Take care of one another.
Go to the city centre on Winter, even if it’s freezing.
Eat Pierogi like it was your last day in life.
TRAVEL, TRAVEL AND TRAVEL.

A las más nuevas del grupo, Carla y Alexandra: vuestra aventura acaba de empezar y quiero daros unos cuantos consejos:

Ahorrad dinero para el verano. Probad todas las cervezas de Polo.
Mantened el contacto con voluntarios de otras ciudades.
Cuidaros los unos a los otros.
Bajad al centro en invierno, aunque esté helando.
Comed pierogi como si fuera vuestro último día.
VIAJAD, VIAJAD Y VIAJAD.

My experience as a volunteer came to an end, but I’m not going far away from here, only 120 kilometers away from Bydgoszcz. So yup, Spain will have to wait, even though at this point I miss it so f*cking bad and all I think about is tapas, Estrella Galicia and Mercadona.

To future volunteers, enjoy as much as you can, because at the beginning, the ending looks faaaaaar away, but when it comes the only thing you have left are the memories. The good ones only.

I might be a Kpop fan

So oh yeah, today I come here to talk you about a very different matter, and I don’t know how to really start to write about it, but let’s try.

Pues sí, aquí vuelvo para hablaros de un tema muy diferente y realmente no sé como empezar a escribir sobre esto, pero vamos a intentarlo.

Last month I was at my place of work (volunteering, work… call it what you want), I work in an office and it happened that they didn’t have nothing to do for me that day. So I was ready to spend a very boring day until I saw that Kpop group in my Instagram feed.

El mes pasado estaba en mi lugar de trabajo (voluntariado, trabajo… llámalo como quieras), trabajo en una oficina y ese día no tenían nada de trabajo para mí. Así que me fui preparando para pasar un día aburrídisimo, hasta que vi a un grupo de Kpop en mi feed de Instagram.

It was Blackpink and they were performing in Coachella. So I went to Youtube and I listened all the hell of their songs and OMG.

Era Blackpink actuando en Coachella. Así que fui a Youtube y escuché todas sus malditas canciones y OMG.

At the beggining I didn’t get it, like “are they singers? dancers? maybe models? oh damn, they can rap too?! Why is so many things happening in one videoclip?” I was overwhelmed, but in a good way, I like extra and shinny stuff so I had a good feeling about it.

Al principio no entendí nada, “¿son cantates? ¿bailarinas? ¿tal vez modelos?, oh, vaya, ¡¿también pueden rapear?! ¿Por qué pasan tantas cosas en un solo videoclip?” Me sentí abrumada, pero para bien, me gustan las cosas exageradas y brillantes así que tuve una buena imprensión de todo en conjunto.

I came from listening to Blackpink songs, to know the name of the Entertainment companies in Korea (and which ones were good or bad), what is a comeback and how important is for idol trainees (yup, they have like schools to be artists) to debut early.

Pasé de escuchar canciones de Blackpink a saberme el nombre de las empresas de entretenimiento en Corea (y cuales eran buenas o malas), qué es un comeback y lo importante que es para un aprendiz (sip, tienen escuelas especiales para ser idols) debutar lo mas rápido posible.

And of course I got to know a bunch of groups and Idols as well, and believe me, it’s a challenge when a group has more that nine members and they all change their hairstyles like every week.

Y claro, me aprendí un montón de nombres de grupos y idols, y creedme, es un auténtico desafío cuando un grupo tiene más de nueve miembros y se cambian el pelo como cada semana.

Also I learned a lot of random stuff about Korean Culture (some of them not good), for example, they think that the blood type defines your personality, the beauty canon is crazy and not approchable in a healthy way and that cosmetic surgery and crazy diets are pretty normal there.

También busqué cosas muy random sobre la cultura coreana (algunas no fueron buenas), por ejemplo, los coreanos piensan que el tipo de sangre define la personalidad de una persona, su canon de belleza es una locura y no es alcanzable de manera saludable y además la cirugía cosmética y las dietas más surrealistas son muy normales allí.

Let’s make clear how this genre was born; Kpop was originated in the 90’s in consequence of Korean youngsters asking their goverment for a change, the country looked pretty much like North Korea nowdays and their people were very atached to traditions and not open to things from outside. Kpop was born as a way to express their desire for a change in Korea, and their admiration for foreign music, specially American (rap, hip-hop, rock…etc).

Voy a explicar un poco como nació este género musical: el Kpop tiene origen en los años 90 y fue una de las consecuencias de las protestas que los jóvenes coreanos llevaron a cabo para pedir al gobierno una reforma. El país en esa época se parecía muchísimo a lo que hoy es Corea del Norte y su gente estaba muy apegada a las antiguas tradiciones y poco abierta a cosas que vinieran del exterior. En este contexto, el Kpop fue uno de los medios que los jóvenes usaron para expresar su deseo de cambio en Corea y su admiración por la música extranjera, especialmente la americana (rap, hip-hop, rock…etc).

Kpop was pretty popular in Asian coutries like Japan, Thailand in China, also there were a couple groups that debuted in America, but without success, until PSY released “Gangnam Style” (YOU’VE DANCED IT A LOT OF TIMES IN 2012 AND YOU KNOW IT), it went viral and it was the first video that reached one billion views in Youtube, pretty cool, right? By the way, did you know that Gangnam is a neightbourhood in Seoul? Me neither, I learned it today. You welcome. 😉

El Kpop ya era popular en paises asiáticos como Japón, Tailandia y China, tambien un hubo un par de grupos que debutaron en América, pero sin exito; hasta que PSY publicó “Gangnam Style” (LO HAS BAILADO UN MONTON DE VECES EN 2012 Y LO SABES), se hizo viral y fue el primer video de Youtube que alcanzó mil millones de visitas, muy guay ¿verdad? Por cierto ¿Sabiáis que Gangnam es un barrio de Seul? Yo tampoco, lo he aprendido hoy, de nada. 😉

One of the things I like the most about the Kpop, it’s that they give the same importance to the choreography of a song as they give to the singing part, without one of them there’s nothing. So the idols have to train both and there’s some that are better dancing and people appreciate them the same as they appreciatte a good vocalist.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta del Kpop es que le dan la misma importancia a la coreografía de una canción que a la voz, sin una de las dos partes, la segunda no sería nada. Así que los idols son entrenados en ambas cosas y hay algunos que destacan más en el baile y los fans los aprecian igual que a un buen vocalista.

When the idols were trainees, they worked really hard and practice every day and probably everynight to be best in everything, they endure a lot dreaming about debuting. Not everybody make it until debut, only 1 of 10.00 trainees.

Cuando los idols aun son aprendices, tienen que trabajar mucho y practicar todos los días, probablemente también por las noches. Estas personas tienen que tener mucho aguante y paciencia, sueñan con debutar algun día y a eso dedican todos sus esfuerzos. No todo el mundo llega a debutar, solo 1 de cada 10.000 aprendices lo consigue.

I think the most impressive thing about Kpop are the music videos. We’re use to watch music videos in the western way, but Kpop goes further. Their aesthetic and their concepts are very well thought and everything just matches with the song.

Creo que lo que más me impresiona del Kpop son los videoclips. Estamos acostumbrados a a los típicos video clips occidentales que siguen un mismo patrón, pero el Kpop va más allá. Sus aesthetics y conceptos están siempre bien pensados y combinan a la perfeccion con la cancion.

They went from trying to copy American videos to make them in their own way. Some videos have such good quality and they are so beatifully pleasant that I would even call them pieces of art from thye XXI century, and if you don’t believe me just watch the videos I will put in the end of the post.

Empezaron intentando copiar los videoclips “made in America” y acabaron haciéndolos a su manera, con un estilo totalmente nuevo. Algunos videoclips tienen tan buena calidad y son tan estéticos que hasta me atrevería a llamarlos obras de arte del siglo XXI, y si no me crees, te invito a ver los vídeos que pondré al final de este post.

One month ago I wouldn’t believe I would like Kpop, it was very far away from my music taste back then, but well, everything changes. For me Kpop is the living proof that the language in music doesn’t matter, even if you don’t understand the lyrics you will understand the intention of the author anyways. It’s the magic of music.

Hace un mes, nunca habría pensado que el Kpop sería de mi agrado, este estilo estaba muy lejos de mis gustos musicales de entonces, pero bueno, todo cambia. Creo que el Kpop es la prueba viva de que el idioma en la musica no importa, aunque no entiendas la letra de una canción, serás capaz de captar la intención que el autor puso en ella. Es la magia de la música.

For me, Kpop is the music for our generation, and probably righ now you would be asking yourself “why?” Well, because it doesn’t focus only on having a good voice singing it is also about beauty, dancing, the kindness and politeness of the idols and a lot of things more. We, as “millennials” don’t want to let only one thing about ourselves to define us. We want to be and like a lot of things at the same time, and we want people (idols) to show us that that is totally possible.

Para mí, el Kpop es la música de nuestra generación, y tú te estarás preguntando “¿Por que?” Pues porque es un tipo de musica que no se centra sólo en tener una voz bonita cantando, también le da importancia al baile, la belleza, la simpatía y la buena educación de los idols y muchas cosas más. Nosotros, como “millenials” que somos no queremos dejar que sea un solo rasgo de nosotros mismos lo que nos defina. Queremos ser muchas cosas al mismo tiempo, y necesitamos a gente (idols) que nos muestre que eso es totalmente posible

So, why you don’t give Kpop a try?

Living abroad!

Hello people from the Internet! My name is Sofia and believe me, this new blog is a huge personal step for me, so welcome to this place where I will write bassically whatever is in my head. Hope you like it.

¡Hola gente de Internet! Mi nombre es Sofía y creedme, haber creado este blog es un gran paso para mí, así que bienvenidos a este sitio donde basicamente escribiré sobre cualquier cosa que me venga a la cabeza. Espero que os guste.

I moved to Poland on September of 2018 from Spain (my country) and I would be lying if I tell you that it was a hard decision to make, it wasn’t, I was really looking forward to do something like this.

Me mudé a Polonia en septiembre de 2018 desde España (mi país) y os estaría mintiendo si os dijese que fue una decisión difícil de tomar, porque no lo fue. Realmente sabía que quería embarcarme en algo como esto.

It’s not my first time living abroad, I studied my Bachelor in Portugal (Portugal is not Spain, you guys, lolz) and I can say that in general it was a really good experience, I grew up a lot, I learned how to cook and a new language, also I had my first view of what I thought it was the “”adult life””.

No es la primera vez que vivo en el extranjero, estudié mi carrera en Portugal (Portugal no España, gente, lol) y puedo decir que en general fue una muy buena experiencia, siento que crecí mucho durante mi estancia, aprendí a cocinar y a hablar un nuevo idioma, tambien tuve mis primeros encontronazos con lo que yo pensaba que era la “vida adulta“.

But, you know what? When I finished the Bachelor I was kind of feeling like I wasted a little bit my time in Portugal, feeling like I was not mature enough to live that experience to the fullest, so I decided to try it again, in another country, way further than Portugal.

¿Pero sabéis qué? Cuando acabé la carrera sentí como si no hubiera aprovechado bien mi tiempo en Portugal, que no había sido lo suficientemente madura para disfrutarla al máximo, así que decidí intentarlo una vez más, en otro país, bastante mas lejos de España que Portugal.

So yup, I decided to come to Poland, a country that made me feel like Elsa from Frozen (less faboulous than her) in Winter, but it’s ok, it’s June and I’m still alive.

Así que sí, decidí venir a Polonia, un país que me hizo sentir como Elsa de Frozen (menos fabulosa que ella, obviamente) en invierno, pero no estuvo tan mal, ya es junio y sigo viva.

And maybe right now you may be asking yourself: “how did she do that? going to Poland from nothing? IS SHE RICH?!” Nope, I’m poor AF, sorry to dissapoint you.

Y tal vez ahora te estarás preguntando a ti mismo: “¿Cómo lo ha hecho? ¿Se ha ido a Polonia así de la nada? ¡¿SERÁ QUE ES RICA?!” Nope, soy jodidamente pobre, siento decepcionaros.

I came here as an European Volunteer, it is part of the Erasmus program and if you are european and younger than 30 years old, you can apply for it too. I will speak more deeply about the whole volunteering thing in another post.

Vine aquí por un voluntariado europeo, forma parte del programa Erasmus y si eres europeo y con menos de 30 años, tú también puedes hacerlo. Os hablaré de este tema del voluntariado en otro post.

One of the most important things about living abroad is learning a new language. In my case, I don’t know what happens but when I’m in contact with a new language that I’m trying to learn, it gives me terrible headaches. I think it is a worthy pain though, like tattoos, languages for me are tattoos in your brain and you do have to take care of them.

Una de las cosas principales de vivir en el extranjero es aprender un nuevo idioma. En mi caso, no sé que pasa pero cuando entro en contacto con el idioma que estoy intentando aprender, me entra un dolor de cabeza terrible. Sin embargo, pienso que es un dolor que merece la pena, como los tatuajes, para mí los idiomas son tatuajes en el cerebro a los que hay también que cuidar.

What I wanted to tell you is that you shouldn’t be afraid of trying new things and that if you have the feeling that you don’t fit in the place you are from (like it happened to me) you should go for a change.

Lo que quería deciros en este post es que no deberíais tener miedo de probar cosas nuevas y que si sentís que no encajáis en vuestro lugar de origen (como me paso a mi) deberíais dar un cambio a vuestra vida.

I miss my friends, my family and the Spanish food (and jesus christ, the weather), but being abroad is making me realise how much I miss them. I didn’t like to live in my town before but now I’m always wondering what is happening there and I am sad if I miss something important like my friends’ birthdays (sorry Elena for forgetting about your birthday, but I love you <3) and the Carnival (TEARS…).

Echo de menos a mis amigos, mi familia, la comida española (por Dios, también el tiempo de España), pero estar fuera me ha hecho darme cuenta de cuanto y me hace valorarlos aun más. No me gustaba vivir en mi pueblo, pero ahora siempre me pregunto que estará pasando por allí y me pone triste cuando me pierdo algo importante, como los cumpeaños de mis amigos (sorry Elena por olvidarme de tu cumple, pero te quiero <3) y el Carnaval (LÁGRIMAS...).

Living abroad is like starting again your life, trying to be a different human being, and making new resolutions. You are not the same person in different places, but at the same time you are.

Vivir fuera es como empezar tu vida de nuevo, probar a ser una persona diferente y hacer nuevas resoluciones. No eres la misma persona estando en sitios diferentes pero al mismo tiempo sí que lo eres.

It’s mixing your past life with the new things you are learning in the prensent and not having any freaking idea of what the future will bring to you. It’s a YOLO, but a very very exciting one. Living abroad is so worthy that you cannot imagine if you’ve never tried it before.

Es mezclar tu vida pasada con las cosas nuevas que estás aprendiendo en el presente y con no tener ni pajolera idea de lo que te va a venir en el futuro. Es un YOLO, pero uno muy muy emocionante. Vivir fuera de tu pais vale tanto la pena que no te lo puedes ni imaginar si nunca lo has probado.

Why not trying it now?

¿Por qué no probarlo ya?
